More Than the Blues

After treatment, you may miss the support you received from your health care team. You may feel as if your safety net has been pulled away and that you get less attention now that treatment is over. Feelings like these are normal.

For most women with breast cancer, these feelings go away or lessen over time. But for one in four, these emotions can become severe.

When time does not heal the painful feelings, and your emotions get in the way of daily life, you may have a medical condition called clinical depression. Much more than the blues, depression is treatable with talk therapy, medications or a combination of both. Outcomes are excellent. For some breast cancer patients, cancer treatment may have contributed to this problem by changing the way the brain works.

Get help. You don’t have to be a martyr, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Talk to your doctor. If your doctor finds that you suffer from depression, he or she may treat it or refer you to other experts. Many breast cancer patients get help from therapists who are expert in both depression and cancer recovery.
